Nee had been furloughed for months, but is now officially leaving the company.

Marvel publisher John Nee has been laid off from the company, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Nee joined Marvel in January 2018, filling the role left vacant by Dan Buckley’s promotion to president of Marvel Entertainment the previous year; prior to that, he had worked at DC from 1998 through 2010, eventually reaching the post of SVP of business development at the company, and from 2010 through 2018, as co-founder and CEO of gaming company Cryptozoic Entertainment.

His layoff was part of ongoing cutbacks at Marvel parent company Disney, and follows Nee’s furlough in recent months, according to sources familiar with the situation. It’s unclear who, if anyone, will assume publisher duties at Marvel in the wake of his departure. News of his layoff was initially reported by ComicBook.com.

Marvel has not responded to requests for comment.
