Captain America's "Watergate Moment" Is Coming in Marvel's 'Secret Empire'
Captain America's hidden allegiance is about to be revealed to the entire Marvel Universe, and it's going to be a "Watergate moment" for his fellow comic book heroes, according to Marvel Entertainment — as well as the launch of the publisher's new Secret Empire.
The summer event series, which has previously been teased and built up across a number of months, spins out of the ongoing storyline in Captain America: Steve Rogers that has revealed the Avenger to be a secret agent of Hydra. Now the head of secret agency SHIELD, Rogers is in charge of the intelligence forces of the Marvel Universe — exactly where no one wants a devotee to a fascist cause to be.
The nine-issue series will "definitely see an impact on our new, younger generation of heroes, a huge turn for them, a Watergate moment for them," Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort, who's shepherding the series alongside Captain America writer Nick Spencer, told ABC News. (Artists on the series include Steve McNiven, Daniel Acuna and Leinil Francis Yu.) "They will have to grapple with what this means and reset their heroism. You don't want it to be bleak and miserable, you always want to have hope and be uplifting, and that's the aspect of this story where the other characters in the Marvel Universe have to kind of come together for."
Any parallels between Secret Empire with the current political status quo are a coincidence, according to Brevoort. "We are always planning a year, 18 months into the future," he explained. "We know exactly how this is ending, we know what's coming after that and after the thing that's coming after the thing."
Secret Empire launches in April.
