Latest 'Mary Poppins Returns' Trailer Teases New Song

The trailer for the Emily Blunt-led sequel to Disney's 1964 classic features deep-sea exploration, lively animation and a magical new musical number.

On Dec. 19, Mary Poppins will pay another visit to the residents of 10 Cherry Tree Lane, and she'll be bringing an endless carpet bag full of new adventures with her.

Mary Poppins Returns sees Poppins returning to the Banks family household 25 years after nannying Michael (Ben Whishaw) and his sister, Jane (Emily Mortimer), to bring joy to Michael's children (Pixie Davies, Joel Dawson and Nathanael Saleh), who are grieving the unfortunate death of their mother.

Stepping in for Julie Andrews, Emily Blunt plays the magical nanny. Lin-Manuel Miranda co-stars as Jack, a friendly lamplighter who apprenticed under Bert, Dick Van Dyke's character in the first film. The film's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious supporting cast includes Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury and Van Dyke himself.

If the new trailer is any indication, audiences can expect Poppins to bring her usual mix of magic and whimsy to the table during her stay with the Bankses. An undersea journey, a trip to an animated fairground, a flight through London skies and more can be glimpsed in the trailer.

It also features a snippet from one of the film's new songs, "Can You Imagine That?" The original Mary Poppins was a musical that contained such hummable tunes as "A Spoonful of Sugar" and "Chim Chim Cher-ee", and Mary Poppins Returns will be a musical as well. Hairspray songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman contributed the film's soundtrack and score.

Mary Poppins Returns was helmed by Chicago director Rob Marshall, who previously teamed with Blunt and Streep on 2014's Into the Woods. David Magee (Finding Neverland, Life of Pi) wrote the screenplay, and John DeLuca and Marc Platt (Into the Woods) produced.

The sequel hits theaters on Dec. 19, 54 years and four months after the original debuted.
