The novel revolves around a love triangle that consists of a man, a woman, and, wait for it, a black hole. Mixing physics, alternate realities, and ideas of scientific objectivity with the quirkiness and obsessive nature of love, Table tells of a scientist Alice who, along with her colleagued, have created a black hole that they name Lack. Lack is a very selective about what it sucks into its void, accepting some objects, rejecting others. To Alice, this selectivity translates into an irresistible personality. To Phillip, Alice’s ex-boyfriend, the void becomes a rival lover, spurring on feeling of intense jealousy as he embarks on a nigh-impossible, and multi-universal, quest to win her back.
The book was first published by Doubleday in 1997. Letham, a MacArthur Fellowship recipient, is known for his novels such as Motherless Brooklyn and Fortress of Solitude.
Penhall is the English playwright behind the acclaimed Blue-Orange and adapted Cormac McCarthy’s The Road as a drama starring Viggo Mortensen. He created Mindhunter and exec produced with David Fincher and Charlize Theron. The show starred Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany
Gondry tackled the mix of memory and love in the mind-bending 2004 movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which starred Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet and won him an Academy Award for best original screenplay (he shared the award with Charlie Kaufman and Pierre Bismuth). The movie has a strong and devoted following from critics and cinema-lovers.
The filmmaker first made a splash on the music video scene, making spots for acts such as Daft Punk, Radiohead, and Beck. Human Nature, Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet are among the features in his oeuvre, with his last one being 2015’s Microbe & Gasoline. He was most recently a director and executive producer on the Showtime series Kidding, which reunited him with Carrey.
Penhall is repped by Grandview, Hansen Jacobson and UK's Judy Daisch. Lethem is repped by WME. Gondry is repped by WME and Jackoway Austen.
