Screenwriter Joe Ballarini’s debut three-book middle-grade series A Babysitter’s Guide to Monsters has been acquired by HarperCollins imprint Katherine Tegen Books.

The story follows a teenage girl searching for the child she was babysitting after her charge gets kidnapped by monsters. The book will be written in diary form and told from the babysitter’s perspective.

Publication is anticipated in fall 2016 or spring 2017.

Ballarini wrote the script for the upcoming feature adaptation of My Little Pony that is scheduled for release in 2018, and he’s also scripting the adaptation of the kids' book Cardboard for Fox Animation. He sold the spec script Lockdown at Franklin High to Sony Pictures with Michael Bay producing.

Ballarini is repped by Paradigm, Apostle’s George Heller and McKuin Frankel. Paradigm is also handling film and television rights for the project.
