New 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Easter Egg Is an Impressively Deep Dive

Who expected a simultaneous shout-out to both 'Dazzler' cover art from 1983 and Taylor Swift?

It's the small things that count.

Sophie Turner, who plays Jean Grey in next month's X-Men: Apocalypse has shared an unexpected Easter egg from the upcoming movie on Twitter, teasing she and Cyclops finding "our favorite singer's album (pre 1989, of course)." That album? Sounds of Light and Fury, by none other than Dazzler.

As shout-outs go, this is a multi-layered one. It's not just that Dazzler is a singer-turned-superhero in the Marvel comic book universe — and one who debuted in an issue of Uncanny X-Men, at that: No. 130, back in 1980 — but the album cover in Tye Sheridan's hands in the image is actually an exact replica of a cover that appeared on the front of 1983's Dazzler No. 29 by artist Bill Sienkiewicz and designer Eliot R. Brown.

Additionally, the "pre 1989, of course" comment teases a rumor, which first circulated last summer, that Taylor Swift — whose 1989 album dominates many a metaphorical turntable still — would make a cameo in the movie. The rumor started when Apocalypse writer and producer Simon Kinberg tweeted an image of Swift with Apocalypse stars Turner and James McAvoy last July, although he later told MTV that there was nothing to it, and that the photo was simply taken backstage at a Swift concert near the Apocalypse shoot.

Does Turner's tweet reference that backstage visit, the 1980s setting of Apocalypse, or tease that perhaps Kinberg was covering up a surprise cameo that people guessed too early? The truth will finally be known May 27, when X-Men: Apocalypse reaches theaters.
