Nicolas Cage 'Jiu Jitsu' Trailer May Upend Viewer's Day
Nicolas Cage has a new sci-fi martial arts film on the way, and its trailer dropped Tuesday. A warning before watching: viewers may need to take some time to themselves and regroup afterwards.
As with most modern-day Cage films, there is a lot to unpack in the Jiu Jitsu preview, so best to do some stretching with the basics before the full-on, netless acrobatic journey that is the material.
Heat Vision breakdown
Directed by Dimitri Logothetis (Kickboxer Retaliation) with a screenplay by Logothetis and James McGrath, who both created the 2017 comic under the same name, the film stars the fan-favorite Cage as — wait for it — a sword-wielding, wise-cracking Jiu Jitsu fighter and mentor.
The movie also stars Alain Moussi, Frank Grillo, Rick Yune, Marie Avgeropoulos, Juju Chan and Tony Jaa.
Running almost two-minutes in length — although it feels like it could be in the space-time continuum of lasting both a single second and a month — the trailer sets up the story of, well — it is a lot like Predator. It is basically Predator.
A comet passes over the Earth every six years and when it does, a portal is opened in which an alien "spaceman" from a distant galaxy stops by "looking for a fight" with the chosen Jiu Jitsu fighters. And, as Cage's character Wylie puts it, if the fight doesn't take place, the alien "stays and he kills everything."
(Best Saturday Night Live Stefon voice) This trailer has everything: Crazy, over-the-top martial arts fights, machine guns, knives, swords, an alien that knows Jiu Jitsu, but also has an array of alien gadgets, and finally what looks like a huge sword fight between Cage's character and the alien.
Jiu Jitsu arrives in select theaters, on demand and digital Nov. 20.
