Producer Frank Marshall on 'Jurassic World 2,' 'Assassin's Creed' and 'Bourne' Future
Producer Frank Marshall has his hands on some of Hollywood's biggest franchises. In the next months and years, just a few of his projects include Jurassic World 2, Indiana Jones 5 and Assassin's Creed.
Over the summer, he helped introduce Jason Bourne, the fifth installment of the longrunning action series. It went on to earn more than $415 million worldwide and saw Matt Damon return as the lead. The film is hitting Blu-ray Tuesday — and Heat Vision has an exclusive clip and also caught up with Marshall about his future work.
What is the state of the Bourne franchise moving forward?
I'd say the Bourne franchise is alive and well. And we're certainly moving forward to continue making Bourne movies.
Is it more likely we'll see Matt Damon, Jeremy Renner or perhaps a third hero star in the next Bourne movie?
We don't know. These movies are one of a kind now because there are no more books to reference. One of the things we have done is we've opened it up. We have several new, fresh characters, and who knows where the next one is going to take us?
What was the toughest part for you as a producer of Jason Bourne?
The Las Vegas section was the biggest challenge for me. It certainly is a challenge in many areas, just to get permission to be there. We had two huge crews. We shot in a real casino. We shot on the strip. We had a lot of challenges there and they were very cooperative in Las Vegas. Working together, we were able to overcome all of the hurtles.
J.A. Bayona is following Colin Trevorrow to direct Jurassic World 2. What makes him right for the job?
He brings the same thing that Colin did. He's a wonderful filmmaker, but he's also a fan of the franchise, so that combination we discovered is a really good one. If you look at his movies, he's got a tremendous eye and will bring a freshness but also a familiarity to the movie.
Jurassic Park 2 and 3 weren't as beloved as the original. How do you avoid possible pitfalls as you move forward with more Jurassic World films?
It's about story. I wasn't involved in the second or third [Jurassic Park films], so I don't know how they went, but certainly we've got Colin and Derek [Connolly] writing this second one, so that's a big plus for us. When Colin designed Jurassic World, he was looking forward as well to what No. 2 and No. 3 might be.
Is there anything you learned from Indiana Jones 4 that you are bringing to Indiana Jones 5?
I really haven't had any discussions yet about Indiana Jones. That's now over at Disney and part of Lucasfilm, so we really haven't any meetings on it. I really don't know yet. I think there's a release date of 2019, so that's a year away.
Videogame movies have historically been hard to get right. What will make Assassin's Creed different?
I think the gamers are going to be happy, but the general audience is going to dig it too. It's a very highly stylized world that we enter into and certainly the cool part is being able to go back and visit your ancestors in a certain period of time. It's fascinating the journey our character takes. If you play the game, you know you are in the present a very short amount of time and then you go to the past. We have flipped that, where we are in the present a lot, although we go back to the Spanish Inquisition three times. There's much more of a story between these two characters — [played by] Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard — so, I think everyone has something to look forward to it.
How will you remember Bourne down the road when you think back on your career? Where does it fit with your legacy?
I'm most proud of the fact that we started on this Bourne journey back in 2000 and we are now 16 years later and we've made five movies and we created the Bourne world, which a lot of people have now been imitating. What is that saying, imitation is the highest form of flattery? The style of the movie and the characters and everything. I'm really proud the same group came back together on this one and were able to achieve a new movie and move us into the future.
