'Marvel's Spider-Man' Scores Record-Breaking Opening for PS4
Be greater, indeed.
Marvel's Spider-Man for the PlayStation 4 set a record for Sony by selling 3.3 million copies in its first three days of release, the fastest of any PlayStation first-party title in history, Sony confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. The game went on sale Sept. 7. The new milestone surpasses fellow PS4 exclusive title God of War, which moved 3.1 million copies when it hit shelves in April.
Spider-Man's success was buoyed by strong reviews and the fact that there hadn't been a full game dedicated to the webslinger since 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, an underwhelming tie-in title with the Andrew Garfield-led film.
Next month, developer Insomniac Games will release the first DLC for the game in The City That Never Sleeps, a trio of episodic episodes that add more content to the game's open world.
Spider-Man is just the latest success for Sony, as the company's PS4 boasts an impressive lineup of exclusive titles for 2018. In addition to God of War's massive launch, the Japanese gaming giant also scored a hit with Detroit: Become Human in May, which in June hit the 1 million copies sold mark faster than any other title from developer Quantic Dream.
