Reality isn't what it appears, and the very idea of sanity might be a lie… at least, that's what BOOM! Studios' new horror series The Unsound wants you to believe.

The series, which launches this summer, comes from writer Cullen Bunn — the scribe behind titles such as The Sixth Gun, Helheim, Marvel's Uncanny X-Men and Monsters Unleashed — and artist Jack T. Cole. It's the prolific Bunn's second series from the Californian publisher; a movie adaptation of his first, Empty Man, is currently in postproduction with David Prior directing.

The Unsound follows a nurse at a psychiatric hospital as she descends into the lower levels of the hospital and, in the process, uncovers secrets about what's really going on in her new workplace. She also finds reasons to doubt her own grip on reality.

"This is one of those stories that starts small, then escalates into an epic exercise in world- and mythology-building," Bunn told Heat Vision about the series, which returns him to the supernatural horror of earlier projects like The Damned and Harrow County. "It's the kind of story I love reading and the kind of tale I love writing. I can't wait for readers to discover this surreal, terrifying world along with me."

The Unsound No. 1 will be available digitally and in comic book stores June 7.
