Red Sonja to Become a Superhero in Upcoming Comic
She’s used to vanquishing fantasy threats with her broadsword, but in 2021, iconic sword and sorcery hero Red Sonja will have to get used to working with costumed crimefighters thanks to the new series Red Sonja: The Superpowers.
Written by Dan Abnett (Justice League Dark, Aquaman) with art by Jonathan Lau, colors from Andrew Dalhouse and letters by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, the series starts with Sonja in her familiar world of Hyrkania, where she discovers some unexpected strangers — who just so happen to be superheroes from Earth looking to appoint a hero as the local protector. Could Sonja be just what they’re seeking?

The new series accompanies the previously announced Vampirella: The Dark Powers, also written by Abnett, in which the long-running horror character also finds herself in the unexpected position of joining a superhero team in order to save all reality. As might be expected, the two series are not unconnected…
"Ever wanted to see what a sword would do to an over-confident superhero..?" Abnett said in a statement. "You know, now that these projects are both announced, that Sonja and Vampi are going to meet. That’s going to be big. But without getting spoilery, that’s just the start..."
Red Sonja: The Superpowers No. 1 will be released in January 2021, with covers from Lucio Parrillo, Joseph Michael Linsner, Jonathan Lau, Vincenzo Federici, Junggeun Yoon, and a cosplay cover featuring Tabitha Lyons. Linsner’s cover is at the top of the post, with Parillo, Lau, Federici and Yoon’s covers below.
