Comedian and actress will cameo in this week's issue

She’s a comedian, actress and writer who’s been nominated for Emmys, Grammys and WGA Awards — but as of this week, Sarah Silverman will also be able to list “Marvel Comics character” to her already impressive resume, following her appearance in Wednesday’s Deadpool No. 40.

“She’s always up for fun and we thought this would be a way for her to do something and appear somewhere where she hasn’t before,” co-writer Gerry Duggan told ComicBook.com about Silverman’s cameo in the issue. “You know, it sort of came out of it being a fun gag but then also sort of including a voice who [is] already politically active.”

Silverman will appear as a someone protesting against the Roxxon company, one of a number of sinister corporate entities in the Marvel universe (Roxxon is also at the heart of events in the current ABC Marvel series Agent Carter). The comedian is “environmentally aware and her heart is in a good place,” Duggan said, but the environmental angle of the issue — which protests “tracking,” a version of fracking that involves the use of gamma rays — comes from Duggan himself. “I do believe Water is a moral issue. We can’t exist without it. Just because someone can make a quick buck off it doesn’t mean it’s right,” he said.

Also making cameo appearances in the issue are Duggan’s fellow Marvel creators Jason Aaron and Jason Latour.

“Somewhere along the way, when we got into figuring out what our most crazy story yet was we knew we wanted to include Roxxon because of all the nation building Jason Aaron had been doing in Thor,” Duggan explained. “So, we dropped him a line asking if we could borrow him. He obliged and was excited, but I responded and said ‘No, I want to use YOU.’”

Deadpool No. 40 will be available in comic book stores and digitally Jan. 14.
