David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith are producing the adaptation of the Maggie Stiefvater book.

Scorpio Races has found its director.

Matt Sobel, who made his feature debut with this year’s Sundance drama Take Me to the River, has been tapped to helm the Focus Features’ adaptation of the Maggie Stiefvater book.

The story, which has shades of The Hunger Games, is set on the fictional island of Thisby where, every November, a deadly race is held on mystical and dangerous water horses.

English screenwriter and playwright Jack Thorne wrote the screenplay based on the 2011 book, which was published by Scholastic.

David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith’s KatzSmith Productions is producing, while Jay Ireland will executive produce.

The project is a major jump in scale and size for Sobel, whose River was a low-budget indie that tackled themes of homosexuality and abuse.

Sobel is repped by WME and Cinetic Media.
