Sega Introduces Its Own Classic Lineup of Games on Amazon Fire TV
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of its Genesis console, Sega has teamed with Amazon for Sega Classics, a 25-game bundle that brings games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage to Fire TV.
Thurday's announcement follows recent classic console releases by Nintendo and Sony, which have each issued a miniature throwback system over the past three years. Unlike the NES Classic, SNES Classic or PlayStation Classic, however, Sega Classics is not a new console for fans to collect. Rather, Fire TV users can access the catalog of classic Sega games right from their device.
The entire library of games offered can be played with the Fire TV remote, but using what is intended as a television remote to control the speeding blue blur of a supersonic hedgehog is clunky at the best of times. Luckily, Amazon Fire TV allows for Bluetooth controllers to be synced with the device, and seeing Sonic, Tails and Knuckles back in action again is a satisfying jolt of nostalgia. Given that 15 of the titles in the bundle support multiplayer, player twos will likely get stuck with the Fire TV remote while their partner selfishly hoards the Bluetooth controller (unless, of course, one's house is stocked with two sets of sticks).
While the Sega Genesis catalog of games isn't nearly as memorable or iconic as its Nintendo or PlayStation cohorts, the list of games that are included with Sega Classics is a good representation of the era. Joining the original three Sonic the Hedgehog games are the side-scrolling shooter Gunstar Heroes and the beat-'em-up Streets of Rage series, along with a number of other titles that never reached the level of mainstream recognition that the company's signature blue mascot achieved. Sadly absent from the lineup is the quirky ToeJam & Earl, which is something of a cult classic and has been rereleased in the past for the Nintendo Wii's virtual console, as well as the PlayStation Network and Xbox Arcade in 2012.
While much of the appeal for Nintendo and Sony's classic consoles was their miniaturized design and a roster of classic games that defined a generation, Sega Classics offers a bit of counterprogramming with its easy access and lack of clutter for already packed shelves. Additionally, the $14.99 price is significantly lower than that of its competitors, and most fans to which the bundle appeals to would likely pay for just the Sonic titles alone at that fee.
