'SNL' Co-Head Writer, ‘Alex Strangelove’ Filmmaker Team for Horror Comedy (Exclusive)

New Line just picked up the package, putting the project into development.

New Line has picked up The Parenting, a project that puts an LGBTQ twist on the horror-comedy genre.

Kent Sublette, the co-head writer of Saturday Night Live, will write the script and Craig Johnson, the helmer perhaps best known for the 2014 comedy The Skeleton Twins, is in negotiations to direct.

Chris Bender and Jake Weiner of Good Fear Content are producing.

Plot details are being kept under lock and key but it is understood to have tones of Meet the Parents, the 2000 comedy that starred Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro and told of a couple who engage in the time-honored, and fraught-filled, ritual of encountering a significant other's parents, and balancing that with the real scares for which New Line, as the company behind The Conjuring franchise, among other horror movies, is known.

Johnson, who is gay, took on sexual orientation tropes with his teen rom-com Alex Strangelove, which told of a young man who finds himself caught between losing his virginity to a girl and developing  feelings toward a gay schoolmate. The movie was released on Netflix in 2018.

As well as Skeleton Twins, which starred Bill Hader and Kirsten Wiig, he directed Wilson, with Woody Harrelson starring in the adaptation of the Daniel Clowes graphic novel.

Sublette has been co-head of SNL for  the last four years, working on the show for over a dozen. His work has earned him WGA Awards in the  comedy/variety sketch category in 2017 and 2018, as well as eight WGA nominations and 14 Emmy Award nominations. He has also done uncredited work on features such as Bridesmaids and The Heat, among several other comedies.

Good Fear last produced the Dave Bautista action comedy My Spy,  which proved to be a hit for Amazon with a sequel now in the works. Among numerous projects in the works is the horror feature The Culling, set up at Lionsgate with David Sandberg attached to direct.
