Sony Planning Female Superhero Movie for Spider-Man Universe
After dating The Sinister Six for 2016 and pushing back The Amazing Spider-Man 3 by two years, Sony is turning its sights on creating a female superhero movie to add to its Spider-Man universe.
Lisa Joy has been hired to work on the script for the female-centered story. While we don't know exactly which crime-fighter Sony plans to center on, a few that come to mind are Black Cat, Silver Sable and Spider-Woman.

The news of Sony's interest in a female superhero film comes on the heels of the success of Scarlett Johansson's turn as an action star in Lucy two weeks ago. The film proved that there is an appetite for female-driven action movies. It topped the box office with $43.9 million in its debut, taking out its action pic competition, Hercules. Marvel also recently announced that it would be launching a comic book starring a female Thor.
After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had a disappointing performance at the box office this summer, Sony pushed the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which had been dated for June 10, 2016, to 2018. Sinister Six, which focuses on the villains of the Spider-Man universe, will hit theaters on Nov. 11, 2016. Drew Goddard will direct.
Joy co-created and executive produced HBO's Westworld, which stars Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood, and is going into production. Previously working TV's Burn Notice and Pushing Daisies, Joy also sold her script Reminiscence, a sci-fi thriller about a service that lets people relive their memories, to Legendary in October 2013. She's repped by UTA and Bloom Hergott.
