With Halloween around the corner, there’s no better time to remember that it’s not easy being dead — a message underscored by Ghosts Are People Too, a new illustrated book from writer, illustrator and filmmaker Peter Ricq that launches its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter today.

The 40-page book tells the story of Ethan Alby, a young ghost who also gets scared of things — including his feelings for a particular living girl who’s taken up residence in the house he haunts, even though she doesn’t knows he exists.

“I wanted to capture the feel of an old illustrated book. A book that's old and wise,” Ricq told The Hollywood Reporter about the book. “I remember as a young child, my father had two books that I gazed at the illustrations for hours on end with my brother, the two books were called Les Chefs-D’Oeuvre De L’Epovante and Les Chefs-D’Oeuvre Du Crime, look em up, you'll see what I mean. Might explain my very morbid side.”

Ghosts are People Too is Ricq’s first illustrated prose book, but it’s possible that readers may already be familiar with his work. He’s the co-creator of animated series The League of Super-Evil, as well as the director of the 2017 horror movie Dead Shack, which was awarded the silver prize for best Canadian feature at the Fantasia Film Festival; he’s also co-founder of the band HUMANS. Beyond that, he’s also written and illustrated three graphic novels — Once Our Land, Once Our Land 2, and A King’s Vengeance — all of which he’s funded via Kickstarter.
