'Star Wars' Confirmed to Join 'Disney Infinity' Video Game

Play sets based on the original and prequel trilogies will be followed by a 'Force Awakens' play set this winter

The Force is strong with Disney Infinity. After months of rumors, it's been confirmed that Star Wars properties will be added to the multifranchise video game with its next major release, Disney Infinity 3.0.

Confirmation comes via Game Informer, which reports that Star Wars will be initially added via two different play sets, set during different eras of the series. "Twilight of the Republic," set between Star Wars: Episode II and Star Wars: Episode III, will turn Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Darth Maul — as well as Ahsoka from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated spinoff — into playable characters. Meanwhile, "Rise Against the Empire" will be set during the original trilogy, and feature Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Darth Vader as playable characters.

A third playset featuring characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens is also reportedly in the works for release this winter. (Additional, non-Star Wars additions to Infinity 3.0 will include Pixar's Inside Out, characters from Tron: Legacy and Mickey and Minnie Mouse.)

Ahead of the release of its June issue, Game Informer also released a video featuring the creators of Disney Infinity 3.0 talking about bringing Star Wars into the fold along with the many other Disney properties. As John Vignocchi, vp production for Infinity, puts it, "Our bench is deep, bro." (The video, which you can see below, also features sneak peeks at the Star Wars Infinity figures.)

Disney Infinity 3.0 will be released later this year. Below the Game Informer video, watch the launch teaser.
