'Star Wars: The Force Awakens': New Images, New Mysteries
New photos from J.J. Abrams' relaunch of Star Wars have been released, offering a tantalizing glimpse of what's to come.
Entertainment Weekly has a gallery of new images from Force Awakens, including scenes of Daisy Ridley and John Boyega's characters on the run from the First Order, cementing Boyega's status as refugee from the bad guys. (Boyega is also seen next to the wreckage of a TIE Fighter in another image, dressed in a Stormtrooper outfit. Is he a former Stormtrooper, or just someone who uses that as a disguise to escape the First Order?)

Also of interest: the revelation that Ridley's character meets BB-8 while freeing him from a scavenger's net — much like Luke Skywalker met R2-D2 and C-3PO similarly by accident — and seeming confirmation that Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) built his own lightsaber, hence the unusual cross guard design. There's also a black X-Wing Fighter in the background of one image, perhaps to accompany the white TIE Fighter seen in the recent TV spot.
In an accompanying story, Abrams reveals that he was lured into the project by a simple question from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy: Who is Luke Skywalker? "He said, 'Oh my God, I just got the chills. I’m in,' " Kennedy tells the magazine. "I mean, it really was almost that quickly."
The question forms the center of the new movie, apparently, continuing the saga of the Skywalker clan that has anchored the series to date. A new twist to the family drama, the magazine reveals offhandedly, is that Luke's sister Leia now has her own lightsaber … and it's the one that Darth Vader used to use, before his death. That doesn't seem like foreshadowing at all, right?
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens Dec. 18.
