'Last Jedi' Deleted Scene Shows Alternate Phasma-Finn Battle

Things almost went very differently when they met for the final time, it turns out.

In another version of a galaxy far, far away, the climactic showdown between Captain Phasma and Finn went very differently, as a newly released deleted scene from Star Wars: The Last Jedi reveals. For one thing, there was the return of the fine tradition of cutting someone’s hand off…

The scene, which will appear on the upcoming home release of the movie, debuted on Lucasfilm’s weekly YouTube series The Star Wars Show and offers a dramatically different take on the meeting between John Boyega and Gwendoline Christie’s characters in the recent movie — one that demonstrates just how dedicated Phasma is to protecting herself in the face of any potential threat, even if it means sacrificing those in her charge.

(The scene starts at the 1:37 mark in the video above, for those too impatient to wait through the introduction.)

While this version of the scene includes the “Rebel scum!” line that appeared in the original version of the finished movie, it’s arguably possible that this take is more satisfying on a character basis, with more emphasis given to Phasma’s desperate vanity — not to mention, the return of the hand-chop motif that appeared in both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi…but perhaps that’s best kept for Skywalkers.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to be released March 27 on Blu-ray.
