'Suicide Squad' Director Promises "Characters With Lives and Souls"
Sure, the Suicide Squad is based on a team of villains fighting for a common purpose — to stay alive — but that doesn't mean that there's no sense of camaraderie between Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Rick Flagg and the rest. Indeed, director David Ayer thinks of them as one big family.
Talking to Entertainment City, the director said that he was excited to shoot in downtown Toronto because it was "just so exciting to bring a show like this to the street and get out in the real world with the real people." He went on, saying that he's "about real drama, real performance, and real people, so my twist on this is I'm creating a family, I'm creating a brotherhood here. I'm creating a very real chemistry and I have this incredible ensemble of actors led by Will Smith, who are basically playing [three]-dimensional characters with lives and souls."
Smith, Margot Robbie and other actors from the movie are visible in the report, as is an unexpected tidbit: a shot of a police car identifies the setting of the scenes being filmed as Midway City, another of DC Entertainment's fictional metropolises, and one that's traditionally home to occasional Justice League member Hawkman. Could the movie be introducing even more characters to Warners' DC Cinematic Universe than previously suspected?
Suicide Squad is scheduled for release Aug. 5, 2016.
