Third 'Purge' Film in the Works
Get ready for another 12 hours of mayhem and murder. Universal, Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes are gearing up for a third installment in The Purge franchise, THR confirms.
James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy, will return to pen the third installment with an eye toward directing. Sebastien Lemercier, Jason Blum, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form will return to produce.
The move makes perfect sense since the first two films — set in a world where all criminal acts are legal for 12 hours — were killers at the box office, with a franchise total of $200 million for films that had a cumulative budget of $12 million.
The first film, which hit theaters in May 2013 and starred Ethan Hawke, earned a stunning $91.2 million worldwide, far surpassing its $3 million budget. The follow-up, Anarchy, which hit theaters in July 2014 and starred Frank Grillo, earned $109.3 million worldwide.
DeMonaco is repped by UTA.
