A new series based on the video game franchise will launch later this year.

Ahead of the release of Assassin's Creed Syndicate, the latest — and largest — game in the popular historical action series of video games from Ubisoft, Titan Comics has announced that it will be launching a series of comic books based on the franchise later this year.

In a statement, Titan editor Lizzie Kaye said that the company — which also releases titles based on BBC's Doctor Who, NBC's The Blacklist and Universal's Minions — is "so excited to be working with Ubisoft on this fantastic new adventure," adding that the games provide "a world that is perfect for us to explore, expand and inhabit with a raft of new characters in new settings. We're really hoping to surprise readers with the direction for this new series."

The writer for the new series has not been named, but the artist for the first storyline will be Neil Edwards, who has worked on DC Entertainment's Justice League United, Marvel Entertainment's Fantastic Four and Titan's upcoming Doctor Who crossover event.

Assassin's Creed has been in constant publication since the launch of the first game in 2007, selling more than 93 million units across nine main titles and a number of related materials. The franchise has been adapted into comic books, prose novels and is currently being developed as a feature starring Michael Fassbender. The latest game, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, is due for release this October.
