Trailer Report: 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Beats 'Fifty Shades' for Best First Week of 2014

That's a Hulk-size debut

The Marvel movie juggernaut rolls on.

Avengers: Age of Ultron blew away the competition in its debut week like Thor thumping his hammer on the ground to create an earthquake. It had the biggest first week for any trailer in 2014.

The first trailer for the Marvel superhero team movie recorded 50.6 million YouTube views, according to technology firm Zefr, which tracks the numbers. Avengers supplants Fifty Shades of Grey, which amassed 36.4 million views, for the top first week for a trailer.

Marvel dropped the trailer six days ahead of schedule after a bootleg copy leaked on the Internet. The company had teased the scheduled Oct. 28 release at the end of the Oct. 21 episode of ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. The movie opens May 1, 2015.

Interest in the trailer (which, let’s be honest, is awesome) was so high that the geek press spent days after dissecting every millisecond.

No other trailer came close to matching Avengers. Insidious: Chapter 3, the No. 2 coming attraction, managed 2.4 million YouTube views. That is ordinarily a good week, but next to the Avengers it looked as puny as normal man next to the Hulk.

Fifty Shades was third with 1.8 million views to reach a cumulative total of 77.4 million.

Two Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 previews — Official Trailer No. 1 and Official TV Spot — held the No. 4 (1.7 million) and the No. 5 (1.5 million) spots.

The Hobbit Battle of Five Armies was No. 6 with 1.4 million views (34.5 million cumulative) and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was No. 7 with 1.0 million views.
