Warner Bros. Nabs Sci-Fi Thriller From First-Time Writer (Exclusive)
Warner Bros has acquired an untitled sci-fi spec script by Josh L. Gordon, a first-time screenwriter who works as an assistant at production company Pulse Films.
Zev Foreman, the former president of production of Voltage Pictures, will produce the project, with Thomas Benski and Brian Levy of Pulse executive producing.
Heat Vision breakdown
Gordon had spent several years in the entertainment industry trenches: He was a development assistant at Annapurna for a while and lastly an assistant to Levy, a literary manager based at Pulse. Gordon reached a point where he was ready to switch career gears and had accepted a spot at a tech intensive, but in his waning weeks he left a script on Levy’s desk.
When the manager read it, he flipped for it and began a process of meetings with agents and producers. (Gordon is repped by ICM Partners, Pulse and Morris Yorn.) The script sold in a competitive situation and now the former Wesleyan film program grad has been launched into a full-time screenwriting career.
Benski, beaming like a proud father, said in a statement: "At Pulse Films, we truly strive to support and empower new filmmakers, fostering up-and-coming talent who share our vision. Josh’s spec is brilliant and fearless.”
The script’s story takes place in a near future where mankind is threatened by an exponential advances in artificial intelligence. In this scenario, a brilliant young engineer finds herself at the center of an eccentric billionaire’s bid to alter the trajectory of the human race. Children of Men and Interstellar are the touchstones here.
Jesse Ehrman is overseeing for the studio.
Foreman worked on numerous movies while at Voltage and most recently was a producer on Colossal, the Anne Hathaway sci-fi movie. Among his extensive credits are executive producing the Oscar-winning Dallas Buyers Club.
Founded by Benski and Marissa Clifford in 2005, Pulse deals with development, production, financing and distribution of content across multiple platforms. Among its recent offering are the award-winning dramas American Honey and The Witch.
