Simon Doonan is a very famous man amongst the fashionistas – he was the window dresser of Barneys New York who wrote the book Confessions of a Window Dresser in the nineties, and changed the way the world looks at store windows. He went on to become the Creative Director of Barneys, designing their window displays and catalogues in all their locales — but he also launched an entire second career as a writer.
Today Doonan is probably better known as a writer. His ex-pat British humour, knowledge of fashion and fashion people, incredible wit and charm have added up to literary success. As well as being the author of several books, he has written for Harper’s Bazaar, The Hollywood Reporter Magazine, the New York Observer, and his name turns up in many magazines.

Gay Men Don’t Get Fat is sort of the gay version of French Women Don’t Get Fat — Doonan describes what are “gay foods” (light, flavorful, healthy, aesthetic — like sushi) and what are construed as “straight foods” – burgers and fries, pizza, guacamole. Aside from being a very practical diet guide, it’s also a pithy humour book with lots of laughs.
Doonan will be signing the books at Barneys Beverly Hills on Friday, January 20, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and we can only imagine how entertaining he will be.
