Awesomeness Films has acquired the film rights to Lauren Oliver’s upcoming young adult duology Replica.
The first book in the pair will hit shelves on Oct. 4, 2016 via HarperCollins. Replica follows Lyra, known by the number 24, a replica — human model — who was born, raised and observed in a clandestine research facility called the Haven Institute. When Lyra escapes from Haven and meets Gemma, a stranger on a quest of her own, earth-shattering secrets are revealed.
The book has a unique structure that includes two complete and independent sub-novels that nonetheless mirror and relate closely to one another and embody the book’s themes about identity, individualism and personal narrative.
The deal marks a reunion for Awesomeness and Oliver, who previously worked together in adapting her novel Before I Fall, starring Zoey Deutch, Halston Sage, Logan Miller and Kian Lawley. Oliver also previously wrote the dystopian Delirium trilogy.
“Lauren has the ability to create worlds that speak to the young adult audience on a personal and lasting level,” said Awesomeness Films president Matt Kaplan. “We look forward to continuing to build on our exciting relationship with HarperCollins and Lauren, which began with Before I Fall.“
The deal was brokered on behalf of Lauren Oliver by UTA and InkWell, while Kaplan and Max Siemers handled Awesomeness Films.
