Ron Kovic’s classic Vietnam War memoir, Born on the Fourth of July, is getting a special 40th anniversary edition in print and audiobook that features a foreword from Bruce Springsteen. Listen to an audio clip of Springsteen and another from the book below. And when does the new edition publish? July 4th, of course.
Hear a clip from Springsteen:
Kovic’s book follows him from star high school wrestler to a patriotic American inspired by John F. Kennedy to join the marines to the traumatic 1968 wartime injury that left him paralyzed from the chest down to his emergence as an outspoken anti-war activist.
Hear a clip of the book (read by Holter Graham):
Born on the Fourth of July has sold more than 1 million copies since its publication in 1976. A 1989 film adaptation was directed by Oliver Stone and starred Tom Cruise as Kovic. The film was nominated for multiple Oscars, including best picture, best actor, best screenplay and best director (winning for best director). Kovic co-wrote the screenplay with Stone and the pair shared the Golden Globe screenplay award.
Springsteen and Kovic have been friendly for more than 30 years and the B-side song on the “Born in the USA” single, “Shut Out the Light,” was written by the Boss about Kovic. See a picture of the two together below:
