Based on the children’s literature classic written by Frances Hodgson Burnett in 1911, the show centers on young Mary Lennox, a sickly, unloved British orphan sent in the early 20th century to live with her cold and distant uncle on the Yorkshire moors. There she discovers a neglected garden and nurtures it back to life, creating a sustaining source of joy, beauty and family regeneration.
With a score by Lucy Simon and book and lyrics by Marsha Norman, the show premiered on Broadway in 1991 and played for 709 performances.
The production was nominated for seven Tony Awards and won three — for Norman’s book, Heidi Landesman’s set design and featured actress Daisy Eagan, who was 11 at the time, making her the youngest female recipient of a Tony. The original cast also included Mandy Patinkin, Rebecca Luker, Alison Fraser and John Cameron Mitchell.
The revival will be directed, choreographed and “reimagined for a new generation” by Warren Carlyle, a 2014 Tony winner for his choreography on After Midnight, currently represented on Broadway with Hello, Dolly!
Lead producers on The Secret Garden are Gerald Goehring and Michael F. Mitri, whose sole previous Broadway credit is the well-received 2012 seasonal engagement of A Christmas Story: The Musical. Dates, casting and additional creative team are to be announced.
