Grey, the retelling of the Fifty Shades story from the perspective of Christian Grey, sold 1.1 million copies in the first four days, publisher Vintage Books announced on Monday. Sales include trade paperback, ebook and audio versions.
Anne Messitte, publisher of Vintage Anchor said in a statement, “This is an astonishing number of books to sell over a weekend. Christian’s side of the story is proving to be irresistible.”
The book is now in its fifth printing and has more than 2.1 million copies in print. The original series has sold some 125 million copies worldwide since its release in 2012.
Author EL James announced the book with a tweet on June 1, and it instantly shot to the top of Amazon and Barnes and Noble top seller lists on the basis of pre-orders. It officially went on sale on June 18the fictional Christian Grey’s birthday.
The reception among critics to the book has been lukewarm.
Grey recounts only book one of the trilogy, so there may be more stories from the POV of Christian coming from James.
