One last time.
Aaron Paul, Jane Fonda, John Kerry, devout fans Rosie O’Donnell and Mariska Hargitay, Edward Norton and Jennifer Lopez (with whom Miranda recently collaborated) were among those in the audience at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The New York City production has been virtually sold out for months, with resale tickets for the original cast’s final performance running upward of $12,000 a seat.
Set to the sounds of the West Wing theme song (a personal favorite of Miranda’s), the final curtain call was met with loud applause as Soo, Miranda, Odom and exiting ensemble member Ariana DeBose (also known as “The Bullet”) took a bow in unison. After repeatedly being prodded by Christopher Jackson, Miranda then stepped forward for a solo bow. Despite shouts from the audience for a speech, he simply stood genuinely moved with his hand held on his chest.
“It was so emotional — the words, the music, the actors, the triumph,” Lopez told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s now a part of Broadway history. I am so proud of Lin and happy I was able to be there with my children, Max and Emme.”
After the performance, Daveed Diggs and Javier Munoz celebrated by taking shots from a Grammy Award. Meanwhile, Miranda chopped off his role-required locks and debuted his clean look at the show’s afterparty. Renee Elise Goldsberry, who took THR behind the scenes throughout the night, bonded with her family and fellow castmates at the Times Square bash.
The composer and star’s longtime onstage alternate Munoz will take over the titular role next week, alongside Lexi Lawson as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton. Brandon Victor Dixon will play Aaron Burr beginning in mid-August.
