You couldn’t find a more timely story than Copeland’s 2016 Chautauqua Prize-winning memoir, part history/part mystery, which weaves together themes of Iran, the CIA and clashing cultures. Copeland was a teen living in Tehran in 1979 when his American-born father was accused of being a CIA spy, becoming the first American to be tried for espionage in the country. But the book is a two-hander, and Copeland’s Iranian mother, who represented the father before a military tribunal, became the first female attorney of the Islamic Republic. “Iran is pretty timely these days, but honestly, I see it as an improbably good role for an actress who fights with all of her strength, intelligence and will as she tries to save her husband and family, not knowing for sure if he is truly a spy or not,” Copeland tells THR.
