There’s nothing like an ill-fated boat expedition to get Hollywood salivating. With recent hits like Captain Phillips and Ron Howard‘s highly anticipated In the Heart of the Sea on deck for a December release, the ship-in-peril theme is once again red hot. This week’s pick of book-to-screen rights available offers a true-story tale that may anchor with a studio.
Last Man Off by Matt Lewis (Plume)
Agents: Steve Fisher (APA), Yasmin McDonald (the U.K.’s United)
Lewis recounts his voyage on a deep-sea fishing boat off the shores of Antarctica in 1998, when as a 23-year-old first-time crewman he had to lead an escape on three lifeboats after the captain went missing during a storm.
The Misadventures of Max Crumbly by Rachel Renee Russell (Aladdin/ Simon & Schuster)
Agent: Daniel Lazar (Writers House)
This middle-grades series from the creator of Dork Diaries (19 million copies sold and a movie in development at Summit) follows the bullied and formerly home-schooled Max, who regrets begging his parents to let him enroll in public school.
