Amazon Studios is on the move.
The Los Angeles entertainment arm of Amazon.com has announced that it will move into Culver Studios at the end of this year. It will occupy more than 280,000 square feet in the Culver Studios Mansion and Bungalows, which will be shared between the studio, Amazon-owned IMDb, Amazon Video and World Wide Advertising.
Culver Studios, which was created by silent movie pioneer Thomas Ince, has had a long place in entertainment history, serving as the filming location for Citizen Kane, E.T., Gone With the Wind and The Matrix, among other films. The Financial Times previously reported that Apple was also eyeing the property, owned by Hackman Capital Partners, for its growing video effort.
The move comes in the middle of wide executive turnover at Amazon Studios following sexual harassment allegations against Roy Price, the studio’s former chief. Price resigned earlier this month, sparking a series of several departures, including head of comedy and drama Joe Lewis and unscripted head Conrad Riggs. International chief Morgan Wandell also departed for a similar job at Apple. COO Albert Chang has been upped to interim studio head, with Sharon Tal Yguado now leading all scripted and Heather Schuster overseeing unscripted.
Amazon won its first Oscars earlier this year for Manchester by the Sea. It is also behind such TV shows as Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle and Bosch.
“We are very excited about being a part of 100 years of movie and TV history at the Culver Studios,” said Cheng in a statement. “Most importantly, this new L.A.-based office will give us the much needed space for our team to work and grow so we can keep bringing Prime members the very best in series and movies.”
Amazon currently employs more than 700 people in Santa Monica. Its new office will be housed at 9336 West Washington Boulevard.
