Beverly Hills cut its water usage by 26 percent in January after sending warning letters to customers with high water usage in November and penalizing some of the consumers.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the city sent letters to 86 single-family residential water customers, including high-profile users like David Geffen, Amy Poehler, Brett Ratner and Max Mutchnick.
Poehler was reportedly charged more than $2,200 for water use at one of her properties, which exceeded 170,000 gallons between May 14 and July 14. Geffen was reportedly charged more than $30,000 for using 1.6 million gallons at a property which, during that billing period, was allowed to use 1.1 million gallons.
Brett Ratner’s spokeswoman told the publication he is replacing his entire water line after multiple pipe leaks were found. Max Mutchnick’s representative told the Times two “substantial” leaks were discovered and repaired.
Beverly Hills is trying to cut its usage by 32 percent compared with 2013, and still needs to decrease its water usage.
“There are other affluent communities in the state where conservation is cool. In Beverly Hills, for whatever reason, people are not motivated,” Cris Carrigan, the state water board’s chief of enforcement, said to the Times.
“We believe that the penalty surcharges have had an impact,” city spokeswoman Therese Kosterman said, following the news of January’s reduced water usage.
