Broadway to Check Into ‘Holiday Inn’

Another classic movie musical will make its way to Broadway next fall, when Holiday Inn fills a vacancy at Studio 54.

Roundabout Theatre Company, in association with Universal Stage Productions, will present what’s being billed as “the new Irving Berlin musical,” which begins performances on Sept. 1 in a limited engagement that officially opens on Oct. 13.

Inspired by the 1942 movie that starred Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire and Marjorie Reynolds, the show has a book by director Gordon Greenberg and Chad Hodge, with choreography by Denis Jones.

Originally developed at Goodspeed Opera House, where it premiered in 2014, the show will feature more than 20 classic songs from the Berlin catalogue, including “Steppin’ Out With My Baby,” “Shaking the Blues Away,” “Easter Parade,” “Cheek to Cheek” and “Heatwave.”

The project marks the second classic Crosby movie with Berlin songs to be retooled for Broadway, following White Christmas. That show played two consecutive seasonal engagements in New York in 2008 and 2009, and has been touring regional stops every holidays since then.

Casting and creative team for Holiday Inn are to be announced.
