Nia Vardalos is returning to her stage roots in the world premiere of Tiny Beautiful Things, as part of The Public’s 2016-17 season.
The My Big Fat Greek Wedding screenwriter and star will make her Public Theater debut in her adaptation of the bestseller by Wild’s Cheryl Strayed. She’ll play Sugar, a hit online advice columnist who thousands of people have turned to for words of wisdom, honesty and hope. Directed by Hamilton’s Thomas Kail, the uplifting play will run Nov. 15 through Dec. 18.
The Public’s season also includes the world premieres of Saint Joan, a rock musical by David Byrne and his Here Lies Love director Alex Timbers that chronicles the rise of Joan of Arc (running Feb. 14 through March 19), and Martin Sherman’s Gently Down the Stream, a play starring Harvey Fierstein that explores intergenerational culture clashes and internet dating (running March 14 through April 16).
Dates were also announced for John Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons New York premiere (running March 17 through April 23) and the first major New York revival of David Hare’s Plenty, starring Rachel Weisz and staged by David Leveaux. Also featuring Corey Stoll, the play will run Oct. 4 through Nov. 6.
