Demi Lovato received the Artistic Award of Courage on Wednesday night at the Open Mind Gala for her advocacy in raising awareness for mental illness. The Grammy-nominated singer was honored alongside Julia S. Gouw (who accepted the Humanitarian Award, in memory of Dr. Lori Altshuler) and Dr. Kelsey Martin who was honored with the Visionary Award, presented to her by Chancellor Gene Block, for her outstanding visionary work in the fields of mental health and neuroscience.
“This award is especially meaningful to me, and I am humbled that you chose me for it. The work I’d like to do and create in the world has just begun,” Lovato explained during her acceptance speech at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“I know we would all love to look in the mirror and love to see what we see,” Lovato continued. “Sometimes I struggle on a daily basis to see that, but I know that when I look inside of my mind, I am happy with where I am at [and] that is the most important thing.”
CAST Centers CEO Mike Bayer accompanied Lovato on the red carpet and presented the award to her.
Lisa Kudrow, who is also a member of the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital Board of Advisors, hosted the event.
“You have the research, and you have the care, but both of them need help,” Kudrow told The Hollywood Reporter. “Because UCLA is a state-funded school, it is important to raise money. They already attract the brightest, but it is still expensive for them.”
The Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital is a research facility dedicated to mental health and neurology at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The hospital teamed up with the Resnick Hospital Board of Advisors, a group of individuals committed to enhancing the efforts of the psychiatric hospital services at UCLA, to raise money that evening.
The philanthropic evening ended with a special performance by Chord Overstreet, a former Glee star and good friend of Lovato.
“I am excited to show my friend Demi some support,” Overstreet told THR earlier that evening. “She works really hard, and I am happy that she is getting recognized.”
The Open Mind Gala raised over $900,000 for the cause.
