“A Whole New World” — or, at least, North America.
Disney Theatrical Productions announced Thursday that the Broadway musical adaptation of Aladdin will launch its North American tour in 2017.
The 12-week engagement will kick off at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre on April 11, 2017, with future tour stops to be announced.
Directed by Casey Nicholaw, the Broadway show debuted in 2014, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin, with the latter also penning the book. It was nominated for five Tony Awards. James Monroe Iglehart, who plays the Genie in the show, won the Tony for best featured actor in a musical.
“We have had the great privilege of entertaining more than one million people in New York City with Casey Nicholaw’s glorious production,” said Thomas Schumacher, president and producer, Disney Theatrical Productions. “I am delighted that audiences in Chicago and throughout North America will soon have the opportunity to experience Aladdin in their own backyards.”
Aladdin has consistently been one of the top-grossing shows on Broadway since it opened, breaking the house record at the New Amsterdam Theatre on several occasions. The musical has earned $146 million in New York to date.
