AP ImagesIn the days leading up to the first GOP primary debate Thursday night, Donald Trump‘s iconic “Make America Great Again” hat has somehow become the must-have accessory for die-hard Trump supporters as well as the haters bent on using Trump’s weapon against him.
The people donning the trucker hats on Instagram, Twitter and beyond are a mix of Trump haters, aiming to mock the presidential candidate with a dose of his own brand of absurdity, and devoted followers — but apart from users who explicitly deny supporting Trump in their tongue-in-cheek posts, it’s nearly impossible to tell who’s joking.
This leads to a preponderance of “Make America Great Again” posts that, whether intentionally so or not, are funny.
The official hats, previously sold only at Trump Tower in New York, were made available online yesterday for $25 (although knockoffs have been sold on various websites now for weeks). A spokesperson for Trump declined to comment on the record when asked about sales numbers for the hat, but a campaign source tells The Hollywood Reporter that there has been an “overwhelming amount of traffic [to the website] in response to the product.”
Several shipments of the hats sold out at the Trump Tower store, the source says, but they are currently in-\ stock.
