Dustin Hoffman is a two-time Oscar-winning actor (he won best actor for Kramer vs. Kramer in 1980 and Rain Man in 1989) with an extensive list of films on his résumé.
But beyond his recognition as a leading film actor over the past five decades, The Hollywood Reporter looks at five facts you probably didn’t know about Hoffman.
Gene Hackman and Robert Duvall’s Former Roommate
Hoffman met fellow actor Gene Hackman when they worked together at the Pasadena Playhouse. Both actors (separately) moved to New York, and Hoffman stayed at Hackman’s apartment before he found a place of his own, according to IMDb. Hoffman later became roommates with the actors’ mutual friend, Robert Duvall.
Guinness World Record Holder
The actor was put in the Guinness World Records book for his character portrayal in 1970 film Little Big Man, IMDb reported. He received the “Greatest Age Span Portrayed by a Movie Actor” award for playing Jack Crabb from age 17 to age 121.
Lost the Tip of a Finger While Filming
During filming of Finding Neverland in 2004, Hoffman reportedly lost the tip of a finger and had to perform an entire day of shooting on morphine.
Father of Six
Six kids call Hoffman dad: two children with his first wife, Anne Byrne Hoffman (Karina, Anne’s daughter who he adopted, and Jenna, whom the couple had together) and four with his second wife, Lisa Gottsegen (Jacob Edward, Rebecca Lillian, Maxwell Geoffrey and Alexandra Lydia).
He’s Named After an Actor
The Los Angeles native, whose father worked in the entertainment industry as a set decorator at Columbia Pictures prior to selling furniture, was named after actor Dustin Farnum, according to IMDb.
