Aaron Sorkin, Allison Janney, Octavia Spencer and many more Hollywood stars spent the afternoon at the second annual Saving SPOT! benefit hosted by Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi on Sunday at the Thompson Beverly Hills hotel.
Stars enjoyed drinks and appetizers while supporting the nonprofit Saving SPOT!, a group that shelters rescued animals until they can find new homes. Janney played with the furry rescue puppies on-site and resisted the urge to bring home a new playmate for the three rescued cattle dog mixes she already has.
“I just want to keep getting dogs, unfortunately,” she said. “I’m kind of a sick dog lady. I love dogs more than anything in the world.”
The benefit was a family affair, as many celebrities brought their family and friends to enjoy fun activities offered by the event’s sponsors. Spencer (who will soon own a new puppy herself) and Ahna O’Reilly (The Help) visited the make-your-own-TOMS station and the Dylan’s Candy Bar booth while actor Cameron Palatas and Awkward actress Greer Grammer checked out the live auction that included a trip for two to the set of New Girl.
Guests also enjoyed making SPOT! T-shirts for their pets and sitting for psychic readings sponsored by California Psychics.
The Newsroom creator Aaron Sorkin, who says his family has “all manner of pets that you would have when you have a 12-year-old” came to support his daughter, who volunteers with SPOT! regularly.
“After school, she goes over and cleans out cages, walks the dogs, plays with them and tries to get people to adopt the dogs,” said Sorkin. “She’s corralled a bunch of her friends into this. This is her thing, and I’m really proud of her.”
DeGeneres and de Rossi made a special appearance, auctioning off the opportunity to travel on a TOMS drop trip to deliver shoes to deserving children at an undisclosed location in the U.S.
“I’m sure everybody here has donated and contributed to SPOT!, which is an amazing store, so we just want more of your money right now,” said DeGeneres.
DeGeneres has been a longtime SPOT! supporter. She has featured the organization’s rescue dogs on her talk show for viewers to adopt.
