Fresh off the release of her sophomore album, Billie Eilish is back on the big screen with her second film, Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles, which debuts globally today on Disney+. The 19-year-old Grammy winner first delved into film with her R.J. Cutler-directed documentary, The World’s A Little Blurry, which arrived in February on AppleTV and Apple+.
Her new cinematic concert film was directed by Robert Rodriguez and features animations by Oscar-winning animator/director Patrick Osborne. Eilish performs her new album, Happier Than Ever, from start to finish with her producer-songwriter brother Finneas, the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, the L.A. Philharmonic orchestra with conductor Gustavo Dudamel and Brazilian jazz guitarist Romero Lubambo.
“I’ve never done anything like this,” the Grammy-winning musician recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “I knew that I wanted it to have some other life in some other dimension that I’ve never experimented in, and that’s Disney… It was an incredibly surreal experience. I hope that it’s going to be a really beautiful experience to watch because it’s my whole album in order, which I’ve never done before, which nobody does. I’ve always wanted to do that. It’s going to be beautiful. I mean, it’s really going to be beautiful.”
Eilish revealed in the film’s trailer that the approximately hour-long film is “also a story at the same time. It’s kind of a beautiful version of old Hollywood… I definitely have fantasies about L.A. a whole different world interwoven with my world.” Judging from the sneak peek below, expect to see scenes inspired by Old Hollywood glamour mixed with quintessential L.A., from zipping around in a silver Porsche to strolling past paparazzi flashbulbs on the red carpet.
