Jack Black will formalize his friendship with My Friend’s Place on April 7 when he takes the stage at the Hollywood Palladium to host the organization’s 30th anniversary gala.
The event, which will shine a spotlight on the organization’s decades-long work on behalf of homeless youth in Los Angeles, will honor the individual work of Miley Cyrus’ Happy Hippie Foundation; USC Football’s Angela Helton; chef, author and activist Alice Waters; My Friend’s Place board member and community advocate Cheryl Hayward; and social media platform Instagram.
The news was revealed Thursday by My Friend’s Place executive director Heather Carmichael, along with art consultant Sylvia Chivaratanond and WholeWorldBand CEO Gregory Butler. The latter two are serving as event co-chairs. For his part, Black says there’s a reason he’s so excited to jump in.
“As a native born and raised in and around Los Angeles, it is my pleasure to host this event honoring those who have stepped up with creative solutions to homelessness in this great city of ours. Les do dis!” he quipped.
Added Carmichael: “As we reflect on our 30-year history in Los Angeles, we feel fortunate to celebrate our accomplishments, and remain resolute in our mission of developing and sustaining unique programming with the goal of ending youth homelessness, one young person at a time.”
Co-founded by Steve LePore and Craig Scholz, My Friend’s Place offers a comprehensive continuum of services to more than 1,350 homeless youth between the ages of 12 and 25, and their children, each year.
Organizers are expecting a crowd of 500 for the milestone event. It’s already been a big year for My Friend’s Place. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti recently delivered a Mayoral Proclamation that designated Jan. 8, 2018, as “My Friend’s Place Day.”
