How did Kate Moss, arguably the greatest supermodel of our time, end up with that title? It would appear thanks in part to an obsession her then-photographer boyfriend had with taking pictures of her. Apparently the famous Calvin Klein Obsession image of her lying naked on a couch was the product of that infatuation.
The face of countless campaigns since the 1993 shot — such as her latest alongside Cara Delevingne for Mango — revealed in a filmed interview with Nick Knight that “I would wake up in the morning and he’d be taking pictures of me.” The “he” is her ex-boyfriend Mario Sorrenti, who is known for his model nudes in glossies like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. “I laid like that for 10 days. He would not stop taking pictures of that.”

If she sounds kind of peeved, it’s because she was. “When you’re in a relationship with a photographer and they start abusing that relationship of being like, ‘I want you to do this, I want you to do that,’” she said, it was the impetus behind their breakup. Soon after though, Moss was shooting with Herb Ritts and Steven Meisel in New York, and living with Sorrenti’s mother, who helped her stay grounded.
Naomi Campbell’s bestie also explained how she has stayed so grounded over the years: “Because I’m from Croydon, if you get above your station somebody will f—king knock you down,” she told Knight. “You can’t go around with airs and graces at all and I would never want to. When I see people do that, I think they look like c—nts.”
