A 23-year-old man who allegedly led authorities on a high-speed chase that ended on Hollywood Boulevard at a usually packed-with-tourists intersection was charged with multiple felonies on Monday, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
Tony Carl Calloway Jr. was charged with one felony count each of fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle while driving recklessly and driving or taking a vehicle without consent, according to the district attorney’s office.
Calloway Jr. is accused of stealing a car from the nearby city of Colton on March 8 and then, on the following evening, allegedly leading authorities on an hourlong high-speed chase, which finally ended at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue after spike strips were deployed by the LAPD.
The chase was shown live from news choppers. A large gathering of people at the Hollywood and Highland intersection could be seen on TV running to the area of the chase, taking pictures.
Calloway Jr. allegedly smoked a cigarette and ignored officers’ orders before being taken into custody. That part was also caught on live TV.
Calloway Jr.’s recommended bail is $185,000. He faces a possible maximum sentence of more than eight years in state prison if convicted as charged, according to the district attorney’s office.
