Marg Helgenberger will make a rare New York stage appearance later this month, as part of the ensemble cast of Theresa Rebeck’s What We’re Up Against, a biting comedy about gender politics, viewed through the prism of an early-1990s boutique architecture firm.
Also joining the cast of the WP Theater production is Damian Young (House of Cards), alongside previously announced stars Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect), Jim Parrack (Suicide Squad, Fury) and Krysta Rodriguez (Trial & Error, Quantico).
In addition to a prolific output for the stage that includes the Broadway plays Mauritius and Seminar, Rebeck is known for her extensive work as a writer and producer for television, notably on Law & Order: Criminal Intent and NYPD Blue. She also was the series creator of NBC’s Smash.
Rebeck wrote What We’re Up Against in 1992, but the play’s premiere came almost 20 years later at San Francisco’s Magic Theater, drawing acclaim that propelled it to a series of well-reviewed regional productions. The upcoming New York staging will mark the work’s off-Broadway debut.
WP Theater (formerly known as Women’s Project Theater) is producing the comedy by special arrangement with Segal NYC Productions. The four-week limited engagement begins previews Oct. 28, with an official opening set for Nov. 8 at the WP Theater. Adrienne Campbell-Holt of Brooklyn-based theater company Colt Coeur is directing.
Helgenberger won an Emmy in 1990 for her breakout role on China Beach; she went on to star in 12 seasons of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and was recently seen in Under the Dome. The actress drew rave reviews last fall for her lead performance in Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.
