APIt’s Kind of a Funny Story author Ned Vizzini died Dec. 19 in New York after committing suicide, the medical examiner confirmed to the Los Angeles Times. He was 32.
Vizzini was a young adult writer whose most popular novel, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, was published in 2006. The book, which was adapted into a 2010 movie with Zach Galifianakis and Keir Gilchrist, centers on a high school student who attempts to commit suicide and finds himself admitted in a mental hospital.
He also published Be More Chill (2004), Teen Angst? Naah (2000) and The Other Normals (2012). Vizzini had teamed up with film director/producer Chris Columbus earlier this year for the House of Secrets book series. The sequel, House of Secrets: Battle of the Beast, will come out March 25.
Vizzini had written episodes for TV series Last Resort and Teen Wolf. He also was on staff at NBC’s upcoming Believe, a midseason drama from J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron.
Vizzini is survived by his wife and their son.
