Patrick Stewart has underlined his desire to become a U.S. citizen.
Two weeks after revealing that he was applying for citizenship in order to oppose Trump, the Star Trek and X-Men icon further expressed his hope to be able to one day call himself an American.
“I love the United States. The country and its people mean so much to me and the impact it has had on my life has been massive,” he told The Hollywood Reporter, speaking from the sidelines of the Empire Awards where he received the Empire legend honor. “I felt actually for a long time that I wanted to contribute more, but while I’m not a citizen I cannot.”
Stewart said that he was “investigating” the matter with his immigration attorney, admitting that “right now, it’s complicated… but it would make me so proud.”
An ardent campaigner and socialist who has fought for numerous issues over the years, Stewart told THR that his involvement in politics actually dated back to 1945 when he committed his “first act of civil disobedience” as a child.
“A policeman told me to move along and I refused, so he lifted his hand to hit me. Policemen could do that in those days,” he said. “And I pointed to where my dad was he had second thoughts about it. My dad was a sergeant major in the parachute regiment.”
