Paula Vogel, the veteran playwright who won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1998 for How I Learned to Drive, will make her Broadway debut with Indecent.
The hit play, which ran off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre earlier this year, is set to open at the Cort Theatre this spring. Previews will begin in early April, ahead of an April 18 opening.
Co-created by Vogel with director Rebecca Taichman, the new play with music centers on Yiddish playwright Sholem Asch’s controversial God of Vengeance, which was shut down by police after a single performance on Broadway in 1923. It is a play seen by some as a seminal work of Jewish culture, and by others as an act of traitorous libel.
Producers Daryl Roth, Elizabeth Ireland McCann and Cody Lassen will present the Vineyard Theatre production in association with La Jolla Playhouse and Yale Repertory Theatre, where the play ran before its off-Broadway engagement.
Indecent has choreography by David Dorfman; Aaron Halva and Lisa Gutkin are music directors and co-composers; Riccardo Hernandez is scenic designer; costume design is by Emily Rebholz; lighting design is by Chris Akerlind; sound design is by Matt Hubbs; and projection design is by Tal Yarden. Casting will be announced at a later date.
